There are quite a bit of us hobbyists out there on the planet (See the map of hobbyists here!), that focus on and share techniques, images, software, guides etc. If you’re interested in learning about or sharing what you know, here’s a list to get you started with groups!
Geo-Stationary Weather Satellite Group on Facebook
- Anything interesting regarding Geostationary Satellite Imagery or Data is accepted. This is the place to discuss setups, equipment, imagery, post-processing imagery, or data, or are looking for some help, this might be the group for you. International members welcome!
- Private Group, requires a Facebook account and administrative approval.
Amateur Satellite Group on Reddit
- A subreddit dedicated to artificial satellites that the everyday folk can interact with, but topics relating to all kinds of man-made satellites are welcome.
- Requires Reddit account.
Weather Satellite Images on Facebook
- If you want to share your captured Weather Satellite Images, you want to discuss setup, equipment, or just like some help to begin capturing awesome weather images, this might be the place for you.
- Private Group, requires a Facebook account and administrative approval.
APT Group on Facebook
- Anything interesting regarding APT/LRPT.
- Do NOT post weather images except if they’re taken from a satellite. WeFax is fine. No SSTV pictures except from the ISS
- If you want to share your captured Weather Satellite Images, you want to discuss setup, equipment, or just like some help to begin capturing awesome weather images, this might be the place for you.
- Private Group, requires a Facebook account and administrative approval.
Goestools-users
- A smaller group for people who use the software Goestools (https://github.com/pietern/goestools)
- Must join and become a member.
GEO-Subscribers
- This is the official group is for subscribers of the Group for Earth Observation (GEO).
- Membership of the group is limited to those who want to exchange information relating to either GEO or earth observation satellites.
- Postings may be moderated.
RTL-SDR Community on Discord
- This Discord server is mainly dedicated to SDRs, however, you can chat about whatever you want as long as it’s within the rules and channel topic.
- Includes many topics on NOAA APT, GEO, S-band, X-band, HRPT, LRPT, and more.
- Requires Discord Membership, and some sub topics require approval to join.
There are also user groups, maintained and administered by NOAA, EUMETSAT, and other agencies. These are typically email groups, that have quarterly meetings of members. Groups are also formed around specific software packages as well, and many are run as forums where one can ask questions or offer advice on issues pertaining to that piece of software. Google is your friend, and a simple search can often yield many results!
